Those who picked up on Rachel's excellent debut 'For You Only' will know that she's a real individual amongst contemporary singer/songwriters. She falls loosely between folk and country, but her songs and stylings are confidently distinct – there are obvious references to old-time styles (in the same manner as Jolie Holland), but Rachel has a unique and memorable sound.
The whole album has a lived in, almost vintage feel which is mainly due to Rachel's smooth, evocative vocal style and the elegant, instantly likeable melodies. Add to this the spare but beautiful backing of guitar, upright bass, percussion and occasional cello and piano and you end with a whole disc that sound unlike anything else out there – the fact that it's an analogue recording adds warmth and depth, and reinforces the distinct feel.
While the vintage sound is obviously present, the lyrics are much more contemporary and the album is full of articulate pieces on modern life and city living; those who revel in imagery and mystery will find much to reward them here.
'Without a Bird' feels effortlessly stylish and comfortably lived in; the open arrangements of the backing and the tender vocals of Ries are all immediately engaging, but there's also real depth throughout. She's obviously a strong artist who is not held down by genre labels or what by her peers are producing and her individuality has produced a disc that is considered, thoughtful and hugely rewarding. Recommended.
