Nancy Kerr & James Fagan are well established as one of the finest folk duos in the UK, and their mix of traditional and self-written songs and tunes have been well received by live audiences over the last 5 years or so; while their duo albums are all excellent, this could well be the album that brings them to a broader audience.
As with their duo albums, the songs here are their distinctive mix of Anglo Australian songs and tunes, and the while Nancy’s beautiful fiddle playing and James’ driving guitar/bouzouki are still all present, the addition of Robert’s concertina and guitar work adds an extra dimension, and has resulted in album that will stand up as one of the finest folk albums of 2008.
The opening track sums up the disc perfectly, it starts with the trio working through Gustav Holst’s Thaxted/Jupiter, which then runs into ‘Leaving Old England’ an Australian folk song about English emigration; it’s a brilliant combination from a beautiful tune into a fantastic song. From here on in the album mixes traditional songs and tunes alongside self-written songs and well chosen covers including a great reading of Iris Dement’s ‘Let the Mystery Be’.
The musicianship through is excellent, and the addition of the double bass of Colin Fletcher on 3 tracks, helps give the sound a little more variety and adds the finishing touches to a balanced album.
‘Station House’ may well be a low-key release, but for those looking for something a little different that’s full of great material and playing would do well to check out this great album.
