Appleseed Recordings, one of the most independent and free thinking labels in the US celebrates its first decade with a 2CD, 37 track sampler including exclusive new recordings by Bruce Springsteen & Pete Seeger (their first ever collaboration), Ani DiFranco and Donovan, as well as a huge range of songs from their back catalogue.
Established in 1997 to "explore the roots and branches of folk and world music, and sow the seeds of social justice through music," the independent label has released more than 80 discs across a broad spectrum including albums from Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, The Kennedys, John Wesley Harding, Donovan, David Bromberg, Al Stewart and Eric Andersen.
This excellent sampler covers the whole range of their catalogue, and features 9 songs specially recorded for the compilation. The two discs are themed, with disc 1 featuring songs with a political edge, while disc 2 delves a little deeper into the range of styles on the label.
Appleseed are an innovative and important label, and this double CD set is a superb collection of contemporary American folk music.
