We featured Oh Susanna's (Canadian singer/songwriter Suzie Ungerleider) previous album, the excellent if very bleak and dark 'Johnstown' last year; this new release has a totally different feel, more relaxed and open, and as a result is a much easier disc to listen to.
The use of instrumentation is superb; guitars, strings, and a variety of keyboards blend together to produce and almost dreamy sound on the ballads, but when things get going the band show that they can mix it with the best of them.
Suzie's vocals keep their distinctive edge from the earlier disc, she has similarities with other alt-country singers, but manages to combine smoothness of delivery with crystal clear vocals. She glides and soars around the musical backdrop, but manages to keep the listener focused on the lyrics.
There are many highlights on the disc, but the first four tracks are as varies and as good as any on the disc, two gentle tracks 'Sleepy Little Sailor' and 'River Blue', the albums only cover 'I've Got Dreams to Remember', through to the jangly country pop of 'King's Road'.
'Sleepy Little Sailor' is a superb disc in all respects; lyrics, vocals, melodies and it's all topped off by understated production - a real gem.
