Calling ‘Shotgun Singer’ a concept album isn’t quite accurate, but it does have the feel and continuity that makes it stand out from the ‘normal’ singer/songwriter output. This comes around from her approach to the recording; she holed up in a rural cabin with minimal recording gear, a range of instruments, and no time pressures.
She recorded everything in layers and her vocals are backed by guitars, cello, keyboards and percussion, it’s an interesting relaxed approach that has rubbed off on the feel of the disc and the laid-back atmosphere is tangible across all 12 songs.
Once Kris had assembled the songs she brought in a diverse range of players to add restrained backing and the co-production of Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter) works well throughout.
The whole album works as a fully realised and coherent listening experience, it has a quiet intensity with interesting arrangements – it works well as an unhurried and relaxing collection.
