'Rosella Red' is Chris While's first solo album in around ten years, and a disc that sees her teaming up with her friend and fellow Albion Band member Joe Broughton who produced and provided a wide range of instrumentation across the disc.
As with many of Chris' songs, they tend to focus on her life, characters she’s met over the years, and places that have made an impact on her. The opening track ‘Falling Ashes’ sums up the album perfectly, a song about her home town of Barrow-in-Furness that tells the story of the shipyard’s demise and the town’s subsequent recovery. It’s an excellent song, full of imagery, character and personality and these are all aspects that can be found across the album.
Although Chris’ guitar and banjo work features heavily throughout, there’s a full and rich range of instrumentation used, including some thoughtfully arranged stings, and Kellie While provides memorable backing vocals across the disc.
While there has been a fairly long wait for this solo disc, it’s certainly been worth the wait and ‘Rosella Red’ will appeal to fans of the duo as well as to the broader singer/songwriter community.
