As the 10th anniversary of Lal Waterson’s passing approaches, Jo Freya has brought together a unique group of musicians to celebrate the songs of Lal. A truly evocative songwriter, her lyrical music and mysterious, timeless imagery made her one of the finest songwriters with links to the English tradition.
It’s fitting that Jo Freya used members of the No Masters Co-Operative to make this recording as Lal was a member, and the use of musicians from the same organisation is an important piece of the project.
The contributing musicians include Jim Boyes, Fi Fraser, Mary Macmaster, Neil Ferguson and Jude Abbott and between them they create a varied and eclectic backdrop for Jo’s vocals, which, while not an exact copy of Lal’s are very similar, but distinct enough to make this a worthwhile project that stands on its own.
The 15 songs are varied and covered a good range of styles, like the original recordings, this is a disc that doesn’t feel bound by any tradition and there’s a mix of upbeat and quieter songs.
Jo Freya has put together the perfect celebration of Lal’s songwriting skills and it’s a disc that will both bring a new audience to her work and be welcomed by those that heard them in their original readings.
