Laura’s previous studio album ‘Even the Lost Creek’ remains a real personal favourite – superb fiddling, a lovely voice and strong range of traditional and contemporary songs make it a fine collection; but it’s this 7 track mini-album that really highlights Laura’s talent.
Recorded live over a few concerts, she’s backed by a two musicians who provide cello, guitar and percussion, but the focus of the disc is her innovative fiddle playing and fine vocals, and what’s more impressive is that she plays and sings at the same time – while this is not unusual in itself, there are few that do both so well.
The 7 songs cover a good range, with an even number of trad. and modern songs alongside an excellent instrumental, but the striking thing is that the 3 musicians create a tangible feeling drive and energy across a number of tracks.
For a mid price mini album, ‘Blow the Candle Out’ is hugely rewarding and all the tracks are of real quality. Very highly recommended.
