Grant Campbell is a Glasgow singer/songwriter with a real talent for channelling the feel of desolate roads, isolation and desperation in his songs – while his style has more in common with Lubbock than Lossiemouth, the landscapes have similar themes, and ‘Beyond Below’ is a memorable album with obvious links to the tradition of American singer/songwriters.
The well recorded and produced sound of Campbell’s guitar is balanced by the rough edges of his vocals, and his world-weary delivery is evocative and adds atmosphere to the whole album.
Obvious links to Springsteen, Dylan and to more contemporary artists such as Jeffrey Foucault are easy to make, but are somewhat missing the point – these are accomplished songs put together with care by an artist who knows and acknowledges his reference points.
‘Beyond Below’ feels like a substantial and serious album, and indeed there are many powerful songs but that’s not the whole story as pretty melodies and delicate arrangements are present throughout and make the 14 song album a well balanced and enjoyable listen.
Grant Campbell may be an independent UK singer/songwriter, but he’s a terrific talent, and one that deserves to be heard and talked about in the same breath as his American contemporaries – highly recommended.
