Although released last year in the US, it’s taken a while for the disc to eventually reach the UK – we should be thankful that it did though as ‘Americanitis’ is a brilliant collection of songs that are destined to age well.
We’ve carried Will’s solo albums in the past, but he’s better known to many as a stellar guitarist and contributor to the work of others, including Rodney Crowell, Todd Snider and Adrienne Young.
What ‘Americanitis’ shows, more so than his previous solo discs, is that he’s much more than a sideman, and deserves to be recognised as a significant singer/songwriter.
The collection of 17 songs stands as a marker about how Kimbrough sees society and politics developing in both America and the wider world; for those who think this is going to be a preachy, holier than thou effort from a worthy singer/songwriter are in for a real shock.
His lyrics are full of humour and satire, and his song styles cover a broad musical range; and like Elvis Costello before him, the subject matter may occasionally be challenging but the emphasis is firmly on fun and irresistible melodies.
Although primarily known as a guitarist, he’s credited with a huge array of instruments on this disc and is joined by a good number of well known instrumentalists and singers who provide support throughout.
With 17 songs to choose from there are many songs that real standouts, the title track is a Dylanesque country duet, ‘Everyone’s in Love’ has a pop edge that feels like something Costello should have recorded, and the final song ‘Brand New Song’ is an unapologetic piece with the genuine air of a protest song, it’s a moving and fitting end to an inspirational album.
‘Americanits’ is a stunning disc that stands out for many reasons, but the main highlight is the overall balance throughout the album, it is full of songs that carry a message but the quality of the arrangements and in particular the melodies make this an irresistible album that can be enjoyed on many levels. A future classic.
